Like all other Illinois police officers, all JJC Police Officers have completed the 440 hour police academy certification course mandated by the
Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. This course covers Illinois Criminal and Traffic law,
firearms training, Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, Cultural Diversity, Crime Scene processing and many other topics that are essential for law
enforcement officers. Once they have graduated, officers undergo at least eight weeks of active field training and remain on probation for up to one
year after completion. JJCPD is also a member of a number of training co-ops including North-East Multi Regional Training Unit (NEMRT) and Tri-River Police Training Unit. These units provide ongoing state-certified training courses for law enforcement officers in areas such as law updates, cultural diversity, evidence technicians, range officer and more. This ongoing training is essential to a professional and effective police agency. Officers must keep their skills honed and remain updated on the latest changes in legal issues, crime, technology and officer safety matters. JJCPD Certified Range Officers conduct mandatory range training and qualification for all JJC officers. Qualifications are four times per year with duty weapons and twice a year with off-duty weapons. Passing range scores are 75%, which is higher than the state standard.
