Domestic Violence

“The crime of Domestic Violence is widespread, pervasive and has no social boundaries.  Abusers represent all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups.  …The criminal justice system provides for effective intervention in domestic violence cases.  …Through victim assistance and the arrest and prosecution of offenders, the criminal justice system can make it possible for victims to create a life free of violence for themselves.” (Will County State’s Attorney Domestic Violence Protocol)

The Illinois Domestic Violence Act (Illinois Compiled Statutes Ch. 750 ILCS 60/101 and Ch. 725 ILCS 5/112A-3) defines domestic violence crimes, establishes remedies for them and explains who is covered.  Protected “family or household members” are defined as follows:  “spouses, former spouses, parents, children, stepchildren, and other persons related by blood or by present or prior marriage, persons who share or formerly shared a common dwelling, persons who have…a child in common, persons who share …a blood relationship through a child, persons who have or have had a dating or engagement relationship…."  Domestic Violence / Abuse is defined as:  “physical abuse, harassment, intimidation of a dependant, interference with personal liberty or willful deprivation.”

JJCPD encourages victims of domestic violence that occur off campus to report any abuse to their local police department.  Incidents of domestic violence occurring on campus should be reported to JJCPD at (815) 280-2234 or 280-2911 in cases of emergency.  Remedies available include criminal charges against the offender and Orders of Protection that prohibit offenders from further abuse, interference or stalking.  JJCPD encourages students and staff who have obtained orders of protection to notify us so that we can work to protect them from any further violence while they are on campus.  JJCPD also has a Nextel phone loan program for domestic violence victims limited to emergency situations.
