December 2005 Is Your Charity Reaching Those In Need?
Katrina, Rita and the Asian tsunami, among other recent natural disasters, have touched and motivated many Americans to do what they
can to help those who were victims of those disasters. These have certainly been the greatest disasters that most of us have ever seen and we have
responded by donating everything from clothes to cash. But are you certain that your donations are reaching those who are in need, and if so, in what
percentage?
It is truly sad that there are those who would take advantage of a disaster and of your desire to help. In the first week after Katrina
hit, several thousand Web sites popped up asking for donations. It is impossible to tell how many of them were legitimately trying to help and how many
were scams but certainly some were in the latter category. Historically scammers and con men pop up to prey on human suffering and misfortune wherever
it occurs.
How can you be sure of whom you are donating to and if they will do as they promise with your donation?
Always pay by check to provide a paper trail.
Take the time to research the organization you are considering.
Choose recognized, well established charities such as The American Red Cross,
United Way or The Salvation Army.
Even with established charities, research what percentage of the donations
actually go to the targeted cause. Some charities have huge “administrative
costs” that eat up more than 50 percent of the donated funds.
Make sure that you are donating to the charity you think you are. Some cons set up charities with names similar to legitimate
ones. (eg. American Cancer Society or National Cancer Society. Do you know which is legitimate?)
Avoid telephone and Internet solicitations. If for some reason, you think you
may want to donate to one of these groups, ask for a return phone number and address. That will give you the time to research the group. Any
legitimate
solicitor will not have a problem with providing this information.
By following these few basic guidelines you can feel confident that your donations are reaching your intended targets in the
amount you intended. |
